For those with genuine halitosis, the causes range widely but 85-90% of all the causes originate from the mouth itself.
The most common causes of bad breath are: Food debris, tooth decay, dryness of mouth, gum disease, smoking, severe dieting, non-mouth sources such as infections of the respiratory tract, diabetes, kidney dysfunction among other systemic issues.
